What Tim Tebow Needs to Know Before He Steps Onto the Diamond
What Tim Tebow Needs to Know Before He Steps Onto the Diamond Tim Tebow may not be the first athlete to attempt a mid-career transition to another sport, but the stakes could be bigger for him than those who preceded him. Tim, youâre an undeniably talented athlete, but youâre not on the same iconic level as Michael Jordan, or Bo Jackson â" or even Danny Ainge, for that matter. And while your outspoken political and religious views have earned you plenty of fans, theyâve also created a contingent of people who would love to see you fall. Similarly, your feats in college athletics are the stuff of legend, but after bouncing around the NFL, thereâs a similar group of sports fans ready to pounce. So word that youâre planning to give up football for a shot in Major League Baseball is certainly turning some heads. And it has sports analysts split down the middle â" but theyâre all hoping you gave this a lot of thought before word got out. âOnly do it if you genuinely think youâre going to be good at it,â says sports marketing expert Brian Cristiano. âDonât do it if itâs a PR thing. If youâre dabbling at all, forget it.â Your timing, if nothing else, is impeccable. The online debate and television sports pundit chatter are going to ensure your name is front and center once again for at least a short while. Thatâs certainly not going to hurt in raising awareness for your new book â" Shaken: Discovering Your True Identity in the Midst of Lifeâs Storms â" that will be published in October. Keep in mind, though, that your most ardent fans are the ones who admire your character. And theyâll be watching as you start down this road. Youâve got a few things working to your advantage on that front. In 2013, you turned down offers to play in the Canadian Football League and when USA Rugby hinted it would be interested in you via Twitter, you said no thanks. Fans remember that â" and it syncs with some of the ârulesâ for making a big career change when youâre in the public eye. âThere are certain things you tell people considering this: 1) Donât lie. 2) Make sure this is authentic to your long-term goals. 3) Donât do things just for the sake of doing them,â says sports marketing expert Joe Favorito. In opting for baseball, though, youâre hardly making an easy choice. Getting to the major leagues is one of the most difficult achievements in sports, with most players who manage to find their ways onto a teamâs roster never making it beyond the minor leagues. Just ask Jordan, who only made it as far as the White Sox Double-A team in Birmingham. His batting average was a less-than-impressive .202, with just 88 hits in 436 at bats. Within two years, he was back with the NBA. Jordan, though, was in a different league â" in all manners of speaking. âJordan had such a powerful brand presence â" personally, professionally, sponsorship-wise â" everyone wanted to Be like Mike at that point,â says Cristiano. âHe was the most talented sports athlete of all time going into another sport and it didnât work. But his personal brand was so strong that people didnât care. With Tim Tebow ⦠I donât think he has a strong enough brand to just forget about it if he fails.â Ah, but if you do manage to make it to the big leagues? That could take you to a new level of fame. Baseball, after all, is a sport that has an appeal well beyond American borders. Events like the Olympics and World Baseball Classic could extend the Tebow brand â" and notoriety â" to a larger global scale. But you already know that donât you? âIt could add another dimension,â says Favorito. âThis gives him the opportunity to extend his brand beyond where it is now. Heâs young enough where he has a runway of 30 or 40 years of being positive ambassador. ⦠I donât think this decision was made in a vacuum.â Chris Morris is a South Carolina-based freelance writer.

Improve Your Work Instant Messaging Skills - Work It Daily
Improve Your Work Instant Messaging Skills - Work It Daily Instant messaging at work is a powerful communication tool with big pluses and possible minuses. Sending a message is a direct intrusion into a boss or co-workerâs current project, which can be either a helpful and appreciated message, or an unwarranted distraction. Below youâll see some of the pitfalls and rewards that come along with workplace IMing, and tips to help you excel at quick communication. Begin with the general context to make sure the receiver knows what you are talking about. Though you may know what your message is pertaining to, you need to give enough information in the message so the reader does as well. Explain the project, refer to the earlier email, list the date of the meeting â" whatever information is needed to orient the receiver to the topic you are talking about. Also, it's extremely helpful to include a link to whatever you are referring to, when necessary, and use a real example to help explain whatever it is you are messaging about. For example, link to a webpage that shows an example of what it is you want to do or need help with. With a question, make sure to copy and paste the question you are answering or the comment you are responding to. If more than one question has been asked or the question was asked some time ago in the conversation, make sure to be clear. It is also helpful to ask a question that can be answered with yes or no to save on time for both you and the recipient. You should also copy and paste an important conversation to other people or other places. If you discussed something that involves other people, e-mail them a copy of the IM conversation. If the conversation is related to an issue documented on a wiki, forum or project management system, copy and paste the IM into that location as well. Along with that, donât send out your words in little chunks â" write your whole thought out before sending your message to the other person. You should use IM for time sensitive communication. If you do not get a response back after an IM, assume the recipient never saw it. Try again, or try e-mail. Know the preferences of your co-workers, e-mail versus IM versus phone, and make sure to use IM only during standard work hours, unless needed for an emergency. Make sure you turn on archiving so you donât have to repeat yourself by asking the same question twice. Look up the answer in your logs if you canât remember. Pidgin is a system that has this helpful capability. Remember to summarize at the end of an involved conversation so the recipient and yourself know what you have solved, what still needs to be done, and are on the same page. By making your messages thorough yet concise, and using IM when appropriate, much more can be accomplished during the work day.
