You Can Develop Your Emotional Intelligence at Work

You Can Develop Your Emotional Intelligence at WorkYou Can Develop Your Emotional Intelligence at WorkCan managers and other employees develop emotional intelligence? While some researchers believe that emotional intelligence is an inborn characteristic, others believe that emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened. The can be learned and increased club is my choice because I have experienced many individuals who have enhanced their emotional intelligence when they put their minds to it. In fact, in coaching and consulting with organizations, one area of focus has been to help leaders further develop their emotional intelligence. This is the most important dichotomy, noted by Kendra Cherry, in her description of emotional intelligence and its history. Managers and Emotional Intelligence Have you ever known a manager who had poorly developed emotional intelligence (EI)? This manager has difficulty understanding the emotions that are communicated in every message by em ployees. With the amount of the meaning of the message that employees communicate via nonverbal cues, facial expression, and tone of voice, this manager has a serious disadvantage. He will have difficulty receiving the whole message that the employee is trying to communicate. A manager with a low EI capacity is also ineffective at understanding and expressing his or her own emotions. This includes recognizing the fact that he has underdeveloped EI. A common reaction is to say that he is completely open to feedback, but that the communicator is wrong about this issue. But, the primary problem with a manager with low EI is the managers inability to realize and understand the impact of his or her actions and statements on coworkers in the workplace. A second major problem for a low EI manager is that a coworker or reporting staff member who has highly developed emotional intelligence can play the low EI manager like a fine-tuned violin for better, and for worse. Emotional Intellige nce in Action Can managers do anything about this? Emotional intelligence can be learned and strengthened, but only when an employee understands how emotional intelligence is observable and useful in the workplace. Cherry states that Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer, leading emotional intelligence researchers, recognize four aspects of emotional intelligence the perception of emotion, the ability to reason using emotions, the ability to understand emotion and the ability to manage emotions. Examples of skills that a part with emotional intelligence might display in these aspects include awareness of and ability to read body language and other nonverbal communication that includes facial expressions, the capacity to listen so intently that he or she can hear the words not spoken by paying attention to the tone of voice, inflection, pauses, and other cues, the ability to control and handle frustration, anger, sorrow, joy, annoyance, and other emotions, recognizing and reacting to the imp act that his or her words and actions are having on coworkers, whether they inform the manager of the impact, or not, understanding the underlying emotion of a communication from a staff member and responding as effectively to the emotional aspects of the communication as to the stated needs, andeffectively interpreting the cause of the emotion expressed by a coworker. That said, dejected posture can indicate a significant issue at home as well as an unresolved work issue. Increasing Your Emotional Intelligence Managers who are able to relate with their developed emotional intelligence, whether because of nature, nurture and/or practice, bring an extra dimension of understanding and relationship building to their work assignments. Several components of the interaction of an individual who has highly developed emotional intelligence were described. These are nine ideas about how to strengthen your emotional intelligence in day-to-day practice. Practice deep and focused listening when communicating with another employee. Instead of rehearsing your response while the other person is speaking, focus your mind and attention on asking questions to clarify and understandwhat the person is saying.Summarize and feedback what you think you heard the individual say to you. Ask if your summary is an accurate portrayal of the communication content.Ask questions to identify emotions and feelings. Ask the employee how he or she feels about the information provided to you. Ask for their gut feeling about how things are progressing. If you have difficulty reading how the employee is reacting to a situation emotionally, ask to discover. Most employees are only too willing to disclose an opinion when their manager indicates interest. You will further develop your emotional intelligence, too, by listening.Practice noticing body language or nonverbal communication. Stop your hurry long enough to recognize when body language is inconsistent with the words spoken. Get used to in terpreting body language as a means to understand an employees complete communication. With practice, you will get better. Observe your own reactions to an employees communication. Make sure that you react on two levels. You need to react to the facts and to the underlying emotions, needs, dreams, and so forth that are expressed in most communications if you are observant. Again, if you dont get the second level, that involves emotions, ask until you understand.Notice whether the employees with whom you relate most effectively are just like you. Explore whether you are receiving shared communication or just making assumptions that the employee will feel and react in a particular way, based on your experience. Ask questions, and notice responses.Note too, that you might attribute these employees with having more knowledge and insights based on your shared connection. Develop a sense of when you are being played. An employee with highly developed emotional intelligence is already anal yzing your reactions and understands what you want to hear. This employee is skilled at building the relationship side of your connection- for good and for ill.Pay more attention to your own emotions. Analyze how you respond in emotional situations. Seek feedback from employees whom you trust to react with some degree of unbiased, unprejudiced response. Seek additional feedback from a boss or mentor who can describe your impact on others in a meeting, for example. You Can Further Develop Your Emotional Intelligence You can develop your emotional intelligence, but it will take persistent focus and practice. Seek and use feedback to round out your own perceptions of your actions and behaviors. Emotional intelligence is a hallmark of an effective manager or leader. They understand and appropriately react to both the content of a message and the underlying emotional and meaningful components that make a message live and breathe in an organization. They are able to build sustainable relationships with peers and reporting staff. Without emotional intelligence, a leader is handicapped severely in his or her ability to perceive and react to the emotional component of communication and interaction with other employees. This inability will kill their effectiveness.

What We Talk About When We Talk About AOLs Distressed Babies

What We Talk About When We Talk About AOLs Distressed BabiesWhat We Talk About When We Talk About AOLs Distressed BabiesBefore I address AOL CEO Tim Armstrongs public justification for scaling back his firms 401(k) plan on rising health care costs such as those associated with two AOL-ers that had distressed babies that were born that we paid a million dollars each to make sure were O.K., Id like to make a few observations gleaned from my two decades as part of the so-called American workforce. The first people are typically paid commensurate with the amount of stress their job requires that is, on average, the mora stressful your job, the mora money you earn. The second the more people who report to you and the more revenue your direct reports are responsible for both correlate positively with pay.The third jobs at public companies as well as jobs at companies in the public eye are typically more stressful than their counterparts at private companies and companies the public doesnt mu ch care about. These three generalizations I present only to say that with respect to Armstrong, who later took back his plan to cut retirement benefits as well as his distressed babies statement (supposedly sincerely apologizing to one of the mothers of one of the distressed babies), I have no problem with the fact that Armstrong earns $15 million a year (or the price of 15 distressed babies as some have pointed out). Nor do I take issue with his wanting to cut costs (even if Im still unsure what retirement costs have to do with health care costs, and even if said cost cutting came on the same day that AOL reported a 13 percent rise in revenues). And I certainly understand the stress associated with having your every word dissected by employees, the media, and the public (even those words that you premeditatedly speak). In other words, I believe that Armstrong is paid fairly for his work, that he should (as he is more less legally required to) constantly be looking for ways to impro ved AOLs bottom line, and that its no easy task to have to watch each syllable you utter when outside the confines of your own home. However, what I take issue with is that its become apparent- from Armstrongs distressed babies statement and from aelendher incident last summer in which Armstrong nonchalantly fired an employee on a conference call in front of 1,000 of his coworkers- that the CEO is an impetuous decision maker, not to mention cares little about the satisfaction, well being, and privacy of those who work for him.To say the least, its troubling that the head of a company as large as AOL would think its okay to single out two life-threatening health conditions of relatives of employees in a public forum, and publicly blame them for cost-cutting measures at that.According to Forbes, which does a good job of paraphrasing what the AOL CEO meant by making those comments about the distressed babiesArmstrong is effectively blaming extremely premature infants, who are clinging d esperately to life, for the cuts he chose to make in his employees retirement benefits. Were still paying to keep behauptung precious little angels alive, he assured his employees. But if any of you are mad about your pay cut, you know who to blame. And, sure enough, within minutes of Armstrongs statement, employees indeed knew who to blame. And unfortunately for Armstrong, one of the babies-to-blames mothers, the wife of an AOL empoloyee, turned out to be a novelist (and apparently in between books) and went on to pen a well-written, widely-read, widely-commented-on, well-worth-reading article for Slate criticizing the AOL CEOs statements entitled My Baby and AOLs Bottom Line. Heres an excerptI take issue with how Armstrong reduced my daughter to a distressed baby who cost the company too much money. How he blamed the saving of her life for his decision to scale back employee benefits. How he exposed the most searing experience of our lives, one that my husband and I still struggle to discuss with anyone but each other, for no other purpose than an absurd justification for corporate cost-cutting.Now that the dust has settled in the wake of the question of whether or not Armstrongs statements were insensitive or not (they most definitely were, seemed to be the majority opinion), the question of whether Armstrongs statements violated privacy laws is beginning to be addressed. The following comes from a New York Timespiece on the subjectThis example shows how easy it is for employers to find out if employees have a rare medical condition, said Dr. Deborah C. Peel, founder of Patient Privacy Rights, a nonprofit group in Austin, Tex. She urged regulators to investigate Mr. Armstrongs disclosure about the babies, saying he completely outed these two families. In response to a query about how Mr. Armstrong learned the specifics of the AOL employees situations, Doug Serton, a spokesman for AOL, said, We arent commenting on these issues.Which is probably the best decisi on an AOL executive has made all week.Follow meVaultFinance.Read More My Baby and AOLs Bottom Line (Slate) AOLs Tim Armstrong Violated Decency, Not Employee Privacy Protections (BusinessWeek) AOL Chiefs Words Leads to a Study in Im Sorry (DealBook)

How to Develop a Growth Mindset

How to Develop a Growth MindsetHow to Develop a Growth Mindset Growth mindset, a term coined by researcher Carol Dweck, assumes the position that someones potential is unfixed, and ones skills and abilities can be increased with passion, training, and deliberate effort. Someone with a growth mindset welcomes challenges, and views their failures as opportunities to learn and develop . This is a well-founded thought, as neuroscience proves that ur brain changes and becomes more capable when we work hard to improve ourselves.Conversely, a person with a fixed mindset sees their qualities and abilities as carved in stone. They view their failures as a potential threat to their identity, have difficulty working through challenges, and react emotionally when faced with obstacles.Where a growth mindset focuses on the process, learning, and the journey, the fixed mindset gets stuck on results. If youre a manager, focusing on growth mindset could be a key ingredient for your successManagers with a growth mindset demonstrate better ability to pay attention to information thats inconsistent with their expectations and assumptions about their employees. They are also shown to be more data-driven in response to performance changes on their team. Keeping a growth mindset helps managers challenge their biases and make better decisions based on facts, when it comes to behaviors and performance. On the flip side of this, managers with a fixed mindset are less likely to give feedback and coaching to their employees, especially when they perceive them to be less competent. They also struggle to receive useful feedback. As a manager, its essential that developing a growth mindset is always top of mind.To develop and leverage a stronger growth mindset, consider the following perspectivesDevelop self-awareness around your own mindsetIsabel Duarte , mindfulness and leadership coach suggests notice and be curious about when youre approaching a situation with a fi xed mindset, and consider how you can reframe it.Think of an instance where you experienced unexpected positive change within yourself. What do you attribute those changes to? How can you re-emulate that kind of growth?Dweck suggests asking yourself the following questionsDwecks research explains that great managers dont try to prove that they are better than others, and dont undermine the people around them to increase their own power. They focus on improving themselves, and building teams of really great people, who continuously grow and develop. If youre managing a team, think about the way you act in the workplace towards others. Do you focus on your own power, and achievements, more than on your employees well-being? If you find yourself nodding yes, consider the ways you could re-adjust your focus. For example, you could look for opportunities to give and share leistungspunkt to your team for work well done.Re-appraising a situation in a way that removes threat is an emotional regulation strategy that can be employed by anyone When experiencing challenges at work, ask yourself questions like thisDuarte says Learn to re-appraise negative situations and assume positive intent. When something fails to fall in line with your expectations, try not to get caught up in the script of how you want things to go.When youre faced with a challenge you feel you cant move past, rather than saying I cant do this, rephrase this sentence to I cant do this yet . This small change in mindset can have a lasting impact on your ability to work through solutions and stay motivated.Once youve done the work for yourself, consider how to foster this mindset with your team . Dweck outlines the following ideas to considerConvey that the organization values learning and perseverance, not just ready-made genius or talentIts important to present skills as learnable and create a space where failure while learning, is accepted. To get your team comfortable with this idea, you can share stories about times when you were not successful and failed at something. Be honest about how youve overcome obstacles too.distribution policy value on development within your team. As a manager, are you providing your team with apprenticeships, workshops, coaching, or stretch assignments? These are great ways to encourage learning. Duarte suggests that when it comes to every day team workflow, seek opportunities to delegate tasks that empower your team to learn and further their skillsGive feedback in a way that promotes learning and future successThe lines for feedback within your team should always be open, both for you to give to your team, and for them to give to you. When you notice an employee falling into a fixed mindset, remind them of a time when they were successful in something that was challenging at first.Feedback can be a great time to debrief on mistakes made . Rather than ignoring or reprimanding them, take the time to explain the proper process, and coach em ployees to make meaning from their mistakes.Developing a growth mindset will not only help you at work, but in relationships, and all other aspects of life So look inwards and ask yourself how you can push towards growth each day.Stacy Pollack is a human resources professional who helps employees, leaders, and organizations develop through innovative programs. 7 Human Organs on One Chip

7 Human Organs on One Chip 7 Human Organs on One Chip Scientists in the U.S. and U.K. have recently grown seven miniature menschenfreundlich organs and housed them together on a chip to create a human-on-a-chip, a whole body biomimetic device. These clusters of assembled cells mimic how organs in the body function, both separately and in tandem. The chip could take the place of animal and tissue testing for drugs in pharmaceutical development, say its creators. It will have to win regulatory approval in each country looking to use it for tests, and it could allow for insights into how organs interact, says Linda Griffith, professor of biological and mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Griffith heads The PhysioMimetics program at MIT, which has collaborated with CN Bio Innovations, a British company that creates live organ-on-a-chip devices. The $26.3-million development program is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.Drug companies ha ve a pipeline and were adding to the tools in their pipeline, Griffith says. What were building is adding to the capability to bring parte of a clinical trial further into the lab. So, before your go to (testing with) people, youre actually trying to bring the people into the lab in miniature form and test things on them.Conceptual schematic of a human-on-a-chip, a whole body biomimetic device. Image MITLabs are already using single organs on a chip to test their drugs. The techniques used to make those organs are the same as those used to create the human system, she says.Researchers and companies have previously grown a liver, a lung, and part of the gut on similar chips, but this is first time seven major organs have been combined to create a functioning human micro-system that mimics human physiology, Griffith says.In its final form, the human-on-a-chip will have ten organs liver, gut, heart, kidney, brain, lung, reproductive system, immune system, vascular system, and skin, says Emma Sceats, CN Bio Innovations chief executive officer. For now, it contains a variety of those. The concept follows the lab-on-a-chip devices that scale single or multiple lab processes down to chip-format, and takes that concept into the medical realm.MIT and the English company created the computer-memory-stick-sized chip from a flexible polymer that features microfluidic channels and seven deep wells that host the organ material. The wells are populated with living organ tissue grown from stem cells or collected during surgery and are then are grown on three-dimensional scaffolds that allow the tissues to adopt the natural 3D structures found in the human body, Sceats says.As in the body, the organs on the chip are supplied with oxygen and food via circulating oxygen-rich fluid pumped through the channels.Researchers will be able to monitor the effects of drugs on chip and look to see is a drug is toxic or beneficial for different organs or the system as a whole, Griffith says. Sceats hopes that the multi-organ device can improve treatments for liver diseases. As of now, a liver transplant is the only way to treat the disease and that comes with multiple complications and the need for a donor, she says. The developers have been careful to ensure the chips can be adapted to integrate future technologies, such as advances in stem cell technologies and personalized medicine that populate the chip with the patients own cells to test or create medicine for their own, unique bodily environment, Griffith says.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer. What were building is adding to the capability to bring part of a clinical trial further into the lab. So, before your go to (testing with) people, youre actually trying to bring the people into the lab in miniature form and test things on them.Prof. Linda Griffith, MIT

Workplace Woes for Women Are More Than Gender Wage Gap

Workplace Woes for Women Are More Than Gender Wage Gap Workplace Woes for Women Are More Than Gender Wage Gap The numbers in the workplace don’t lie. But they don’t always tell the full story when you consider the fact that the workplace woes of women extend way beyond just the gender wage gap. Workplace equality has been a long-fought battle. Although women have experienced tremendous strides over the past fifty years, employers have more to do when it comes to equitable salaries and the pernicious sexism that still exists in some workplaces and industries. The Perpetrators of Office Sexism And, perhaps even more importantly, the everyday perpetrators of office sexism aren’t necessarily those stereotypical male executives. Everyday people at work can also contribute to womens woes in the workplace. Why does this matter? Not only does it benefit these women and their families, in the long run, thanks to recent research by consulting firm McKinsey Company, it’s also good for the bottom line and overall health of the economy. In partnership with Recruiter.com and Toluna QuickSurveys, 1,000 Dreams Fund surveyed 1,000 women aged 18-35 about their workplace woes. While some of the findings were expected, many of them came as a surprise. Here are the most significant office obstacles to Gen Z and millennial female advancement, including advice on how to ease these workplace woes. Woe 1: The wage gap is a prickly subject, and many employers and employees are uninformed. The math behind the gender wage gap isn’t universally accepted. Although the common refrain is that women make 80 cents on the dollar, some economics experts counter that this figure neglects to account for other important variables, such as the industry in question and hours worked. It’s possible, in fact, that a large part of wage discrepancy does not come from malice but instead ignorance. Employees must know their own value, and employers must know what other companies pay similar-skilled staffers. Factors like education and experience have an impact on the appropriate pay for any person- male or female. Determining that figure is infinitely easier thanks to resources such as Glassdoor, Payscale.com, and LinkedIn. Employees, both prospective and current, should check the comps and know the salaries and backgrounds of people in related positions at other companies. Know what people with your skill set are paid, and have enough confidence to ask for (or demand) what you’re worth- especially once you have the data on your side. As for employers, you should know that you risk losing out on excellent applicants and even long-time employees if you aren’t willing to provide competitive wages. The internet, in this sense, is not your friend. Salaries are transparent. So come to the table with offers and promotions that are appropriate, or you’ll turn off your most coveted candidates. That said, well over half- 58%- of the survey respondents said that they aim to chase their dreams, not paychecks. So if your company is lacking in financing but can offer unique and meaningful work, female employees may negotiate on salaries in exchange for exciting work opportunities. The Solution Women must advocate for their own professional growth.Negotiating a salary is tricky. For incoming employees, it is difficult to leverage just how much flexibility exists in the job offer. For existing employees, it always feels like the wrong time to ask for a promotion or raise. The first step, as described above, is self-education, followed by self-betterment. Know what others in your field are paid. Then set out to prove that you are not only as valuable as those people  but even more so. Extend and showcase your skill set so that your executives can clearly see that you are a company asset. When you do broach the subject of a promotion or a raise, you’ll have already established- without saying a word- why you deserve it.It’s also highly useful to seek insights from workplace mentors. Higher-level employees can provide key guidance in professional growth, especially if they previously held a position similar to yours. They may have invaluable advice on how to approach certain colleagues in regards to promotions and raises. A mentor may also choose to advocate for you along the way, vouching for your credibility and potential. Woe 2: Workplace bullying can devastate company morale and drive great employees away from you. According to the data collected, nearly a quarter of women have experienced workplace bullying, sexism and/or harassment. Perhaps even more concerningly, the perpetrators are more likely to be fellow women, according to our research. There are dozens of reasons why one employee may take up arms against another. But it is guaranteed that this behavior is inappropriate and damaging. How to end it? You first must first identify it, and that isn’t always so easy. The early signs are best described as when somebody is actively looking to undermine a coworker in the workplace, whether publicly or behind that person’s back. For example, do you have someone intentionally trying to make you look bad in meetings? Or have you heard from other coworkers that an individual is questioning your authority on a project? This is subversive behavior that starts slowly but can continue to grow if you don’t take notice and address it head-on. As for managers, turning a blind eye to employee squabbles may seem like an easy fix, but allowing harassment to fester can result in a huge mess for the whole team. If employee-on-employee bullying is so blatant that even you’re aware of it, that’s a big red flag. Take heed. The Solution Squash the tension with a level-headed one-on-one talk. Most female-to-female workplace harassment comes from a place of jealousy, resentment, or guarding territory. Even so, that doesn’t make it any less hurtful when you are on the receiving end of snarky comments or full-on sabotage. The biggest mistake in handling workplace bullying is allowing your hurt feelings or animosity to have an impact on the discussion. Employees dealing with a difficult coworker should check their emotions at the door before asking that person to meet over coffee.Once you’re in a comfortable space outside the office, show your willingness to listen, understand their side, and be vulnerable. Showing that you are imperfect, not a threat, may make the person more willing to work with you, not against you.Do not lose your cool in front of coworkers or, worse yet, your boss. Showing your grace and strength under pressure is a huge win for your career. Even if you do have to confide in your manager for the s ake of your job security, he or she will appreciate that you took all efforts to calmly handle this issue on your own first. Woe 3: Highly skilled young women suspect their managers are passing over them. You often hear of ageism as a problem for older employees, but a stunning 77 percent of survey respondents say their age has prevented them from receiving an interview or offer. Surprising, right? Of course, there are many variables that go into a presumed age-based bias- 75% also said that they were not fully confident in their interview skills, which likely correlates to lack of experience. But, such a high figure indicates that there is merit to ageism in the hiring process. And, more than half of the student and recent graduate respondents are not confident that they’ll secure a well-paying job in their chosen field. Here’s the deal, as millennial and Gen Z women already know, droves of young people are directly competing against each other for the exact same jobs. That’s especially true in highly oversaturated industries, but competition is fierce across the board. So how do you stand out from the crowd, even with a college degree that’s still hot off the press? The Solution Mind your financial goals by pursuing the best-paying options.Recognize, first, that thousands of young people are all clamoring for the same jobs. In many cases, landing the perfect job comes down to timing and luck. Unfortunately, timing and luck can’t pay your rent- but a paycheck sure can. While your peers sink deeper and deeper into student debt, all waiting indefinitely for that insanely awesome job, set yourself apart by taking smart action. Market yourself to companies that arent  exactly what you want, but can help you develop your skills and bring in a decent paycheck until you’re more desirable for ultra-competitive roles. In furthering your career, Gen Z and millennial women must wait patiently but proactively. If you’re not growing, you’re standing still while others are surging right past you. And when it comes to those ongoing workplace woes for women, especially those who are just starting their careers, all employers have a role to play in ensuring the advancement and success of women in the workplace.

The 15-minute practice that could change your eating habits for good

The 15-minute practice that could change your eating habits for good The 15-minute practice that could change your eating habits for good Many an infomercial has promised health results from dubious kitchen gadgets or exercise contraptions “in just minutes a day.” But there’s one practice that really  could  make a difference for weight loss and  healthier eating  in a small daily window, and it can be as simple as  pen and paper. (Thank goodness, because who really wants to fork over “nine easy payments” or make room for a space-age fitness doohickey in your closet?) That simple solution? Keeping a food diary.Dietitians have long recommended food journaling as a tool for helping clients develop awareness around their eating habits. Now, new research reveals the major results that can come from putting even minimal effort into food journaling.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! What the research saysAs far back as 2008, one of the largest and longest-running weight loss trials ever conducted  spelled ou t the benefits  of food journaling. The research on nearly 1,700 weight-loss hopefuls found that people who kept careful track of what they ate each day shed twice as many pounds as those who did not. The best predictors of success were how frequently participants maintained their food journals and how much support they received from others. Simply put,  said the study’s lead author, Dr. Jack Hollis, PhD, “The more food records people kept, the more weight they lost.”Think keeping track of every little nibble and sip sounds like an arduous task? Think again. A  2019 study  looked at exactly how much time people spent keeping detailed food journals. An average of 14.6 minutes a day was all it took to see improved rates of weight loss. Tellingly, an even bigger indicator of success was the frequency of log-ins to a food tracking app. People who lost 10% or more of their body weight in six months logged in an average of 2.7 times per day, compared with 1.7 times per day from thos e who lost less than 10%.Why food journaling is so effectiveWriting down the food you eat certainly isn’t rocket science, but it seems to be extremely effective. So what is it about this practice that could make such a big difference for reaching your weight loss goals? To get the lowdown, we checked in with dietitians who use food journaling to help their clients.First, says registered dietitian and integrative nutritionist  Anne Danahy, logging our daily intake tells us the real truth about what we’re eating - and often reveals our blind spots. “Most of us underestimate the number of calories we eat each day because we forget about mindless eating or drinking,” she says. “That handful of MM’s that we grab when we pass by our colleague’s desk, the extra half glass of wine with dinner, or that extra spoonful of rice really adds up. When you’re diligent about keeping a journal, it’s easy to see where or what you need to trim.”For people trying to follow a special diet, like keto or Atkins, a journal can sort out the details of macronutrient balance. “Anyone who is really trying to stay in ketosis needs to strictly limit their carb intake,” Danahy notes. “For this group in particular, food journaling via an app that calculates your carbs or macros is really helpful.”Logging what you eat may even bring to light issues like food allergies or sensitivities that have caused unpleasant symptoms or prevented weight loss in the past. “I usually have people journal food, symptoms, and mood so we can easily look back and make connections between foods and symptoms,” says registered dietitian nutritionist  Caitlin Beale. “This is less about tracking calories, protein, fat, carbs, etc. and more about making connections between intake and what may be happening in the body.”Finally, beyond the nitty gritty of how many cups of rice or tablespoons of peanut butter you ate, a food diary can help you delve deeper into your emotional associati ons with food. “Food journaling can be a wonderful tool to make connections between what we eat and how we feel,” agrees Beale. You may be surprised to find your journal highlights a pattern of stress eating or an unhealthy restriction you can then begin to address. Some tips and apps to get you startedConvinced that keeping track of your daily diet might be right for you? Danahy and Beale offer some suggestions for getting the most out of the practice. For one thing, it’s your diet and your life, so food journaling doesn’t have to look any certain way. “It can be as simple or detailed as you want to make it, depending on your goals,” encourages Danahy. Your food diary might be as low-tech as a spiral-bound notebook or as fancy as a customizable app. For the latter, Danahy recommends  MyFitnessPal  and  Cronometer: “I always stress the importance of physical activity in any healthy eating plan. Both of these apps allow you to track not just food but exercise.”If you r eally want to shine a spotlight on your eating habits, Beale advises getting as specific as possible. “Include all ingredients, even if they seem small,” she says. “Even that splash of cream in your coffee or that handful of almonds you grab as you walk through the kitchen counts.” Her go-to app is  mySymptoms  from Skygazer Labs, especially for anyone trying to make connections between food and physical symptoms.Once you’ve started food journaling, you may decide to keep it up indefinitely - but even a short-term commitment can provide important insights that lead to better eating. Says Beale, “I don’t see it as a long-term necessity, but as a way to reset and open up a person’s eyes to habits, patterns, and ways to make simple changes for positive results.”This article originally appeared on Brit + Co.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Become a Physician Assistant in the Military

How to Become a Physician Assistant in the Military How to Become a Physician Assistant in the Military Working in medicine doesnt necessarily require that you spend the majority or even the entirety of your twenties in school. Physician assistants do some of the same work that physicians do under the supervision of a doctor. They can treat some wounds, reset broken bones, interpret test results, and administer medication. Physicians often extend some of their authority to physician assistants (PAs). Joining the military offers a few qualified individuals a chance to skip ahead a bit and earn free masters degrees and potentially jobs as physician assistants. The Interservice Physician Assistant Program (IPAP) gives service members a shot at a career in medicine.   The military services came to the commonsense conclusion in recent years that  they should pool their resources and train their medical personnel side by side because they  were offering essentially the same jobs in the field of medicine. IPAP was subsequently born.   Qualifying for the Program   It is not an entry-level program. You must first be accepted for service in the U.S. military, and you must serve honorably. You must effectively prove yourself worthy and eligible for IPAP. Seats are limited each fiscal year, so theres no guarantee youll be accepted even if you meet the requirements. You must meet security clearance requirements and be younger than age 42 at the time youre commissioned. You cant hold down off-duty employment during the time youre attending IPAP. You must have completed at least 60 semester hours in college science courses, be currently certified in basic life support, and have taken the SAT test.   Program Overview IPAP is located at Joint Base San Antonio in  Fort Sam Houston, Texas. In total, the IPAP training program lasts about two and a half years. This road still takes plenty of time, but that time is spent in the service with full pay and benefits- a big difference.   The first year and four months of IPAP are spent in a classroom setting in San Antonio. Youll build from a foundation in anatomy, physiology, and chemistry through a detailed study of body systems, medical disciplines, examination techniques, and clinical thinking. The remainder of IPAP is a clinical clerkship that is spent working in a variety of specialty areas at military treatment facilities across the nation. IPAP students also develop and refine a masters thesis paper  throughout both phases of training. Its  presented at the conclusion of the program.     Successful graduates can then take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) to earn their licenses and begin practicing in their branch of service as a PA.  A description of IPAP offered by the Naval Association of Physician Assistants claims IPAP students have a 99 percent pass rate with a mean PANCE score consistently above the national average. Physician Assistant Requirements Each branch of service publishes slightly differing requirements for its physician assistants upon successful completion of IPAP, but military service is typically just the tip of the iceberg. You must also meet the standards for acceptance as a commissioned officer. You must be a U.S. citizen and be between the ages of 21 and 48, although age waivers are sometimes granted to those who served in the military earlier in life. Those who previously served can provide a copy of their DD214 Records of Service. Some additional documents might be requested.   You must already have a bachelors degree. You must be a graduate of a training program thats accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, and IPAP qualifies. The National Commission must certify you on Certification of Physician Assistants, and you must  be able to pass the ECLT, the English Comprehension Level Test if English is your second language.   After Service   Physician assistants who have served honorably can apply for fully funded postgraduate training. Available fields include occupational and emergency medicine as well as orthopedics.

The difference between engagement and motivation matters. Heres why

The difference between engagement and motivation matters. Here's why The difference between engagement and motivation matters. Here's why During my presentations on the science of motivation, I am almost always asked to explain the difference between motivation and engagement. It’s a fair question. I challenge you to read five business blogs without running across tons of data on the value of an  engaged workforce  - and the dismal engagement scores of employees worldwide. However, if you ask most executives a critical question, they rarely have an adequate answer: “How do people become engaged or disengaged in the first place?”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Executives are spending millions of dollars to improve engagement without understanding how an individual becomes engaged or disengaged. In 2007, Dr. Drea Zigarmi and his team of researchers embarked on a mission: Discover the root cause of engagement. Twelve years later, their  award-winning research  suggests a credible psychological theory about how engagement is formed. Their journey of unraveling the mystery of engagement intersected with my journey of applying motivation science.Empirical proof for a 4th level of engagementZigarmi’s team presents  empirical evidence  for a fourth form of engagement on the continuum of disengagement, disengagement, and engagement:  employee work passion.  Referred to as  EWP, employee work passion is a persistent, emotionally positive, meaning-based state of well-being stemming from reoccurring cognitive and emotional appraisals of various job and organizational situations that result in consistent, constructive, work intentions and behaviors.EWP is characterized by five positive intentions: Performs above standard expectations Uses discretionary effort on behalf of the organization Endorses the organization and its leadership to others outside the organization Uses altruistic citizenship behaviors toward all stakeholders Stays with the organization Organizational and job factors improve EWP scoresResearchers found that when  12 factors  in the organization are operational, Individuals are more likely to demonstrate the five positive intentions of EWP.Good to know. You can improve EWP scores by focusing on organizational and job factors such as job designs; workload balance; distributive and procedural justice; and strategies for career and job growth. The problem? Changing organizations can be like turning the Queen Mary - systemic improvements take time, effort and big budgets. And, you need to improve engagement now. This realization led me to ponder: What if we  taught people  to manage their own internal process that leads to EWP? What if we  taught leaders  how to facilitate that internal process? This is where  motivation science  intervened. If EWP is the question, motivation is the answerHow do you foster EWP? Through daily doses of optimal motivation. The type of motivation you experience everyday matters. Motivation is th e energy to act - it is at the heart of everything you do and don’t do. But not all motivation is created equal. Some motivation is high-quality and optimal. Some motivation is low-quality and suboptimal. Like when you eat a handful of almonds and generate high-quality energy that sustains you for hours versus downing a candy bar that shoots your blood sugar to the moon before you crash. Optimal motivation fuels engagement and EWP.  Optimal motivation is equivalent to eating the handful of almonds - it’s the positive energy, vitality and sense of well-being required to pursue, achieve, and sustain meaningful goals while thriving. You create optimal motivation through aligning with values, connecting to purpose, and the pure joy of doing something without the need for an external reward. Abundant research proves that optimal motivation leads to higher creativity, innovation, sustained high performance, and health and well-being. Suboptimal motivation fuels disengagement and active disengagement.  Suboptimal motivation is the equivalent to junk-food motivation - you may experience a burst of momentary energy, but suboptimal motivation doesn’t generate the type of psychic energy required to thrive or successfully pursue your goals over time. You create suboptimal motivation when you are motivated by rewards, money, power, status, image, fear and pressure. Suboptimal motivation undermines your results, both in the short- and long-term. The connection between motivation and EWP is an evolutionary concept. Motivation is the psychic energy that fuels engagement. Optimal motivation fuels engagement and EWP. Suboptimal motivation fuels disengagement and active disengagement.Bridging the gap between motivation and EWPIf EWP, or at least an engaged workforce, is your organization’s strategic outcome, then the best tactic is to ensure that people experience optimal motivation every day. Three ways to begin: Realize that if engagement and EWP are the ends; motivation is the means.  Instead of perpetuating outdated theories such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Skinner’s operant conditioning, and traditional top-down and power-based management schemes, get up to speed on the new and compelling science of motivation. Rethink  leadership competencies  based on good motivation science.  For example, help leaders nurture choice, connection and competence - the three psychological needs required for people to achieve their goals and thrive. Instead of driving for results, focus on ways to encourage choice. Instead of disregarding feelings, focus on deepening connection. Instead of emphasizing outcome goals, focus on learning goals that lead to competence. Recognize that  motivation is a skill.  People can learn to identify and shift their current motivational outlook to experience optimal motivation anytime and anyplace by creating choice, connection, and competence. Practicing the skill of motivation may be the quickest and surest path to EWP. Of course, organizations need to continually improve the factors that encourage work passion, but what if we learn to manage own internal process? What if leaders learn how to create more optimally motivating workplaces? Then when an organization isn’t perfect - and we have yet to find one that is - you and those you lead can still experience EWP. That idea alone feels optimally motivating! This article first appeared on Smartbrief.com.

Inexpensive Advertising Strategies for Your Nonprofit

Inexpensive Advertising Strategies for Your Nonprofit Inexpensive Advertising Strategies for Your Nonprofit If you are involved in the marketing and advertising of a nonprofit, you know that money is always a concern. So how do you get people to donate without blowing the budget? Here are six tips to get you started. 1.  Ask Promotional Experts to Donate Their Services or Work at Reduced Rates Almost every ad agency, PR consultant, and freelancer has a special discounted rate for charity work and nonprofits. Now, it may still put them way out of your league financially, even if it’s 50 percent  off. If you really want that particular expert, whether they’re a copywriter, art director, designer, producer, or any other specialist, sit down with them and have a frank conversation. Tell them what you need, what you can afford, and what you could give them instead of money. For instance, some people will donate their services free of charge in exchange for some great work for their portfolio. Others will do it to network or expand on their skill set. The biggest lesson here is simply this: If you don’t ask, you’ll never know. 2.  Take Advantage of the Google Ad Grants Program If you have a worthy enough cause, you can get some serious free money to spend on Google ads. Designed to help charitable organizations grow and solicit donations, the Ad Grants program could set up your nonprofit with $10,000 in Google advertising every single month. That’s $120,000 per year in marketing, at absolutely no cost to you. Of course, it’s not just as simple as filling out a form and receiving the free placements. You have to pass the eligibility checks. To start, you’ll need to demonstrate that your nonprofit is a valid charity and has a functioning, detailed website. 3.  Create Something That Has Great Shareability The word “viral” is heavily abused in advertising these days. And when someone asks for a viral video, what they are really saying is “get me millions of impressions for the least amount of money possible.” With most industries, that’s tough. But when it comes to nonprofits, there is a natural tendency for people to want to share what they see because they know they will be helping a good cause. They are not going to share something boring or inappropriate, however, so think about stories you can tell that connect with people on an emotional level. 4.  Get a Donate Button Added to Your Facebook Page Anytime you can get something to legitimize your nonprofit- and solicit revenue- you have to jump on it. The Donate button on Facebook is a perfect way to do both, and it takes very little effort on your part.
